What you should absolutely know about Amman

City highlights, food & drinks, expressions, weather, how to get there and how to get around

When in Jordan, do as the Jordanians do, visit the city of Amman, which is intertwined with ancient ruins and a modern expanding Middle Eastern city. The landscape is littered with ancient occupants’ ruins like Roman Temple of Hercules and the 8th Century Umayyad Palace. During your Amman day trips, take a trip to swim in the Dead Sea or do an overnight in a Bedouin tent in the desert. Dine with the locals at The Café or enjoy ancient sights as you stroll down the main part of town. Amman has many coffeehouses, mosques, and souks to ensure no one can be bored in the city

Visit the famous King Abdullah Mosque, Roman Theatre, and the unique Citadel. Learn about the country’s history at the Jordan Museum. Cheer on a horse or camel race at the Royal Racing Club or wander around the Darat al-Funan to see beautiful and renowned contemporary artwork

Foods include mezze (an appetizer dish to most meals consisting of bean stew, hummus, sesame paste), mensaf (cooked lamb covered in a yogurt based sauce), and baklava (a honey glazed nut filled pastry). For breakfast, a strong arabic coffee is a popular choice

Some useful phrases include “ibtiHki ingleezi?” meaning “Do you speak English?” and “afwan”, which is “excuse me”. “MniH” means “good”, “aah” is “yes”, “laa” means “no”. “Good morning” is “Sabaah elkhair”, and “masa’ elkhair” means “Good evening”

Summers are very hot during the day, around 80 degrees, but can be pleasant at night. Fall weather has an average high of 75 degrees, and winters are the perfect time to visit and temperatures average in the 50s. Spring has weather in the 60s

Take the bus from Terminal 1 or 2 into the city center for 1.4 Jordan dinars. Pick from a variety of taxi for around 15 Jordan dinars. You can also take a limo into the city for 50 Jordan dinars

It would be best to hire taxi drivers since they are most familiar with the city. There is a variety of buses to take you all over the city. Bus number 26 takes you from Old Town to the 7th Circle
