09:30 – Walk with Royalty at the Grand Palace and Experience the Holy Buddhist Temples

As the historic capital of Thailand, Bangkok is home to a number of beautiful and important buildings but perhaps none are more regal than the outstanding Grand Palace. This palace has been the official home of the king and the location of a number of royal events and ceremonies dating back to the 1700s, when it was built. The Grand Palace sits on the Chao Phraya River and has gorgeous gold rooftops that rise above the white walls. It houses temples, statues, pavilions, and shrines that are all ornate and lavishly constructed. Wander through the beauty of this historic Palace

Inside the Grand Palace is Wat Phra Kaew or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. This holy Buddhist site is the most sacred spot it Thailand. The statue of the Emerald Buddha itself is believed to provide protection for the entire kingdom Thailand and was first found in the 1400s. Now it is enshrined in the temple here in Bangkok, surrounded by incredible structures that will make you believe in the safeguarding powers of the statue. An aura of spirituality and mysticism lingers around the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and you will leave feeling holier than when you came

Wat Pho or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha is another incredible holy site just next door to the Grand Palace. It is most famous for its large statue of the Buddha, which is covered in gold leaf. It also has exquisitely detailed murals on many of the walls and old Chinese statues in the courtyard now covered with ceramic pottery and colorful tiles. All of these amazing Thai landmarks glitter with gold. Their ornate rooftops are visible from many places around Bangkok. 11:00 – See the Views from the Top of the Golden Mount

As you’ll learn from walking the streets of Bangkok, beautiful temples abound. Wat Saket, or the Golden Mount, is unique however, because it sits atop a rare hill that offers a lovely view of the otherwise flat city. The Temple dates back to the 15th century and requires a short but exhilarating hike to reach the top. Once there you will be greeted by a bright gold shrine and a wonderful view of the surrounding city

The hill that the temple sits on is entirely man made and a bit accidental. The story is that a king was trying to build an enormous shrine out of mud and brick, but it collapsed. Over the following decades the ruins morphed together forming a hill that eventually became overgrown with weeds. Now it is a beautiful place for visitors and pilgrims to come and enjoy the temple and the panoramic view. Wat Saket is also the location of an annual religious festival, so if you get your timing right, you might just get to experience the beautiful Buddhist holy day

At the top of Wat Saket try not to be blinded by the beautiful gold details that cover much of this space.  There are lots of bells and gongs to ring if you want to participate in the temple activities. Take in the view and you will see the tops of golden temples peeking out above Thai houses, the tall skyscrapers of downtown Bangkok, and the massive Rama VIII Bridge crossing over the Chao Phraya River.
