What you should absolutely know about Luanda

City highlights, food & drinks, expressions, weather, how to get there and how to get around

Angola’s capital city Luanda is known for its expensive taste and high-end fashion. During your Luanda day trips, spend time shopping at the city’s many trendy boutiques, antique shops, and outdoor markets. Luanda is a paradise for nature lovers and there are many national parks and green spaces for people to hike. For a quick getaway, visit nearby Mussulo, a small land covered in palm trees, bungalows, bars, beaches, and clear blue waters. Get active with a verity or water sports or relax on the beaches with a cocktail in the afternoon sun

Take a break from the city and immerse yourself in natural beauty at Kissama National Park and the amazing Kalandula Falls. Learn about Luanda’s history at the Slavery Museum. Take photos of the iconic Cathedral of the Holy Saviour

Luanda has amazingly fresh seafood, so make a point to indulge in a few different types while you’re there, including sushi. Have a traditional chicken dish of Moamba de galinha for a staple meal. Fish or goat stew, and lots of Arroz (rice)

“Yes” is “Sim” in Portuguese and “Nao” is “No”. To say “Good day”, you would say “Boa nita” and “Hello” is “Ola”. To ask someone “How are you?”, ask “Como vai?” and “Pleased to meet you” is “Prazer em conhece”

October to May is the rainy season, featuring temperatures in the mid to upper-70s, lots of rain (an average of 3-5 inches per month), and high humidity. The dry season (February to April) can be uncomfortable, with high temperatures and no rain

The pale blue mini-bus taxis are the preferred method of travel to the city from the airport and costs around 2,700 Angola Kwanza or $20 U.S. dollars. Rent a car at the airport to get into the city center for around 5,000 Angola Kwanaza

Luanda is not very walkable and tourists must use a car or other public transportation alternative to get around. Hire a private driver for the day for around 2,400 Angola Kwanza or $20 U.S. dollars. Renting your own car is also a good option
