What you should absolutely know about Porto

City highlights, food & drinks, expressions, weather, how to get there and how to get around

The romantic city of Porto is known for its stately bridges and Port wine production. During your Porto day trips, indulge your senses with a winery tour or visit São Francisco church and gaze at its lavish interior with ornate carvings. Stroll through Zona Ribeirinha and enjoy its lively feel, tapas bars, and great architecture. Climb up Clerigos Tower for breathtaking views of Porto and its soaring bell towers or catch a concert at the modern Casa de Musica. Wander through the town square, Avenida dos Aliados, looking at the nice restaurants and shops. Porto is the perfect city for sightseeing and relaxing

Walk over the Ponte de D. Luis and see stunning views from both levels of the bridge. Embark on a day trip, cruising on the Rio Douro, enjoying wonderful food from around the area. The 19th-century Palácio de Bolsa is a must-see

Port wine is exceptional in Porto and is regularly served with meals. Try one of Porto’s specialties, tripas à modo do Porto, or tingle your taste buds with a delicious salt cod, bacalhãu. Fill up on hearty caldo verde soup as well

“Hello” is “Oi”, “Goodbye” is “Tchau”, and “Thank you” is “Muito obrigado”. To ask if someone speaks English, simply ask “Fala inglês?” and to say “Excuse me” it is “Desculpe”. “Olá. tudo bem?” means “How are you?” and “Muito Prazer!” means “Pleased to meet you” – Quite useful!

Summers are hot: average temperatures are between 60 and 80 degrees. Temperatures drop slightly in the 50s and 60s in the fall. Winter temperatures range between 40 and 60 degrees and days are quite rainy. Springs are warm and rainy, with average temperatures in the 70s

The bus is the easiest and cheapest way to get into the city from the city airport. It only costs 5 Euros per ride. Trams are also available, costing about 3 Euros. Take a taxi for a more private experience for 30 Euros

See the city in a fun way on a Segway tour or go more traditional with a walking tour. A variety of buses, light rail trains, and trams are readily available to cart people to their destinations. Taxis are also an option if you are in a hurry
