What you should absolutely know about San Jose

City highlights, food & drinks, expressions, weather, how to get there and how to get around

San Jose, Costa Rica’s capital, is a city bustling with life. Shadowed by the Talamanca Mountains to the south of the city and many volcanoes to the north, San Jose is the perfect getaway destination. During your San Jose day trips, take advantage of the balmy warm weather. Hit the trails and explore San Jose’s amazing greenery and natural surroundings. Discover the colorful Spanish colonial architecture and visit the National Theatre of Costa Rica. Spend a day at the white sand beaches or shop until your heart’s content at the downtown plazas. San Jose truly has something for every traveler!

Take a tour around the jungle canopy of San Jose on one of the many outdoor excursions. Visit the Museo de Jade and the Museo Nacional de Costa Rica for an in-depth look at the history and beauty of Costa Rica

The most popular food throughout San Jose is the national dish of gallo pinto, a mixture of rich fried rice and black beans. Enjoy tasty casados, complete with rice, beans, and meat for a hearty lunch or dinner

The catch all phrase for Costa Rica is “pura vida”, which has many meanings: “great” or “fantastic,” “hello,” “nice to meet you,” “thank you,” or “you’re welcome.” “Diay” also has a lot of different meanings, from “obviously,” “what happened?” or “what can be done?”

The weather differs all over Costa Rica. San Jose daytime temperatures range from 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, with lots of sun. Nights can be really chilly, with temperatures dropping to the mid to low 50s. Expect a lot of rain and wind if travelling during April to December

Take the local bus from right outside the airport right into the downtown for less than $1.00. Take the Easy Ride Shuttle for around $45 from the airport to the downtown or the hotel area. Ride in a taxi to downtown for around $2

Buses are the most popular way to traverse San Jose. Trains are making a comeback in Costa Rica and are a great way to travel from city to city. Walking is also an option, but keep in mind that pedestrians do not have the right of way
